EXCLUSIVE: Sanjhi Awaz Radio in financial crisis

Sanjhi Awaz
Sanjhi Awaz Radio future in trouble

The future of West Midlands based digital Asian radio station, Sanjhi Awaz Radio is looking bleak after it emerged it had ran out of money.

Sanjhi Awaz Radio, which begun broadcasting in April 2010, was launched with much fanfare as a direct competition to Radio XL, which also targets the Birmingham audience. At the time of launching, the station said it was to fight the likes of Sunrise Radio, Panjab Radio, Punjabi Radio and Asian FX for market share, who all broadcast from Southall but are not providing a local service for the Midlands.۝

According to BizAsia sources, the station has been given a few days of reprieve before the plug is finally pulled this weekend. However, station officials have denied this.

Sanjhi Awaz Radio told BizAsia that it was seeking investors to pump money back into the station or a buyer to takeover it outright. BizAsia understands that it has already contacted various media outlets asking to support the troubled station.

Sanjhi Awaz Radio has recently shed personnel at the station with most of its output now automated, with only a couple of live shows.

Sanjhi Awaz Radio’s studios are based in Oldbury, West Midlands.
