Ekta Kapoor distances herself from ALTT app after government ban
Balaji Telefilms has issued a formal clarification following the government’s directive banning approximately 25 digital applications, including ALTT, over allegations of distributing obscene and inappropriate content.
In light of speculation surrounding Ekta Kapoor’s association with the ALTT platform, the company was swift to assert that both Ms Ekta Kapoor and Ms Shobha Kapoor had relinquished their positions on the board of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. as early as June 2021. The statement emphasised that they had no operational involvement in the company thereafter.
Although ALT Digital was officially amalgamated into its parent entity, Balaji Telefilms, in June 2025 following approval by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), the platform had already been operating independently of the Kapoors for several years. The merger effectively absorbed ALT Digital’s assets, liabilities, and operational functions into Balaji, dissolving its status as a separate legal entity.
Balaji’s clarification comes amid growing media scrutiny and public discourse suggesting a personal link between the banned content and Ekta Kapoor. With share prices dipping by 4.9% on Friday, the statement appears to be part of a strategic effort to shield the brand’s leadership from reputational fallout.
In a press release issued on Thursday evening, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting described the banned platforms—including ALTT, Ullu, Big M Zoo, Prime Play, and Hunters—as promoting vulgar and pornographic content detrimental to India’s social and cultural ethos.
