Disney has overtaken Netflix in subscriber numbers for the first time.
Upon announcing its figures, Disney also announced that it will be launching a new ad-supported streaming service in the US this December.
Disney reported 221.1 million subscribers across its three streaming platforms – Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, at the start of July. Netflix was behind Disney, which has been losing customers.
Disney did signal a warning saying that its subscribers could drop after it lost streaming IPL cricket rights in India.
“We are in a position of strength with record upfront advertising commitment,” chief executive Bob Chapek told analysts in a conference call to discuss the firm’s financial results.
