Disney India to stop making Bollywood films?

Jagga Jasoos -Ranbir Katrina 340x

Rumours are abound that Disney India is to stop producing Bollywood films and instead focus solely on marketing its Hollywood films in India.

As reported by the Economic Times, the company – which took over UTV Motion Pictures in 2012 – to produce Indian feature films saw strong success with ‘PK’ (2014), ‘Chennai Express’ (2013) and ‘Kick’ (2014).

However the company has more recently experienced severe losses following the debacle of ‘Mohenjo Daro’ (2016) and lack lustre performance of ‘Tamasha’ (2015) and ‘Fitoor’ (2016) at the box office.

No official announcement has yet been made by the company and it still has a number of releases, including the eagerly awaited Aamir Khan starrer ‘Dangal’ as well as the delayed Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Jagga Jasoos’.

Reports state Disney will remain in India and focus on its Hollywood distribution following the box office success of ‘The Jungle Book’ (2016) which has become the highest-grossing Hollywood release in India.
