Punjabi superstar, Diljit Dosanjh who has witnessed huge success worldwide with a slew of hit films, music titles and sold-out tour dates, spoke to Sabras Radio and BizAsia‘s Tina Kaur about his upcoming release ‘Sardaar Ji’, which opens up at cinemas this weekend. In the light-hearted conversation, he touched upon his blooming career including his Bollywood debut with ‘Udta Punjab’. Here’s the excerpts:

Firstly, tell us about Poondi- the little teddy bear; is he with you in the UK?

(Laughs) Yes, he’s on tour with me I’ve thrown him in theluggage bag somewhere I۪ll have to find him.

Poor thing must be suffocated?!

He’s a very good teddy bear doesn’t matter where you throw him.

Haha okay, so now you۪re here in the UK to promote your new film ‘Sardaar Ji’, which is set to release on the 26th June 2015: Can you tell us more about it and how the idea came about?

The idea was from Dheeraj Rattan and it is a fantasy film. It’s a type of movie that has not been made in Punjab before and will be releasing on the 26th of June. I hope everyone goes to watch as it۪s a family oriented film. Rohit Jugraj has directed the movie and White hill productions have produced the movie. I can definitely say whoever watches the movie will not be bored.

Must be as your movies are usually comedy, what is the genre of this film? Funny or serious?

Everything; drama, comedy, action bit of everything really.

Brilliant! So you play the role of Jaggi, known as a ‘ghostbuster’ in the UK; do you know what a ‘ghostbuster’ is?

Yes, I only heard about this recently – it’s quite a funny term.

Have you ever experienced any ghosts yourself?

No I don۪t believe in them like I said it۪s a fantasy film and just an imagination. In the film, I have shown not to be afraid of them.

Neeru Bajwa and Mandy Thakker are also in the film with you; what is it like working with the two ladies and how much mischief did you get up to when filming for Sardaar Ji?

It was really good and I enjoyed a lot as I have worked with Neeru ji before in England and it was really fun, and definitely when we do films we get up to pranks.

Furthermore you have been touring the world with your huge success: What is there still left for Diljit Singh Dosanjh to do? What else do you still wish you conquer?

I’ve got a lot to conquer but I don’t want to tell anyone because then you never conquer it but hope it all happens with god۪s grace.

You have already launched your career in Bollywood with Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan in ‘Udta Punjab’, how did you find that? And what is the difference between Punjabi cinema and Bollywood work-wise?

Main difference is money, in Punjabi movies; production money and audience is limited and you can’t spend as much whereas Bollywood spends a lot more as the audience is big however in Punjabi movies you have to work as much and even a lot harder.

What was it like working with Kareena Kapoor Khan?

It was really nice working with her she’s very down to earth and a very good actress, I never imagined that I would have worked with her.

With all the work that you do; how do you find time to relax and what do you do in your spare time?

Go on the Internet and search what news things are out such as new apps that are out, where the media is going and watching YouTube videos to see what the rest of the world is up too

Music wise you۪re into RnB and hip-hop but what is your favourite era in Bollywood?

Music wise in Bollywood I love slow numbers, ones that are known as peppy numbers I don’t like as much.

Songs like ‘Saajan’ and ‘Aashiqui’ from the 90s era?

Yes I’m into Arjit Singh too with songs like ‘Tum Hi Ho’ and songs like that. I like the slow numbers but the rest like the item songs and peppy songs I do not like.
