Dhoni biopic puts Sushant in the big league

  1. Sushant Singh Rajput

When he debuted back in 2013 in the film ‘Kai Po Che’, it was said that Sushant Singh Rajput had a lot of potential. However throughout his career he had always seemed to miss the mark when it came to box office hits, leaving him in the backseat as many of his peers wentforward. All until now, as his recent release ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ (2016) creates his biggest box office numbers to date.

Talking about the money cruncher’s from his previous films, was a trade pundit who was reported byDNA India stating, “His solo release ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ (2013) was a little better at Rs 6.5 crore. ‘PK’(Rs 26 crore) had him in a guest appearance, but it worked solely on Aamir۪s star power. It was disappointing, though, when ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’ (2015) only garnered Rs 4.2 crore on the first Friday,۝

He went on to add, “Not just his peers Varun Dhawan ‘(ABCD 2’ (2015) ), Sidharth Malhotra (‘Ek Villain’ (2014) ) and Arjun Kapoor (‘2 States’ (2014) ), even his seniors like Ranveer Singh (‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015) ) and juniors like Tiger Shroff (Baaghi (2016) ) were doing so much better.”

Talking in perfect cricket language, the pundit explained, “Each one of them was either scoring a century or delivering back-to-back hits. Sushant was losing out on precious time. His contemporaries were delivering big hits all around and he was not even in touching distance of the kind of numbers these films were getting. His biggest grosser was ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ (Rs 48 crore) which means he was yet to hit even a half-century.۝

However with ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ opening up at a colossal Rs 21.3 crore on opening night alone, the numbers keep ongrowing. With critics and audiences alike being very impressed with Singh’s performance, it seems he has finally proved that he has what it takes to succeed in the business. If this is anything to go by, there will be no surprise if the actor’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing.
