Deepika Padukone candidly spoke about her battle with depression in an interview recently, It has since emerged that she is hoping to begin an awareness campaign focussing on mental health in India.
Padukone struggled to get up in the mornings while shooting for her film Happy New Year۪ (2014). She revealed a side to stardom that remains hidden because it is so taboo in the sub-continent. However, by raising her voice and speaking about it, the actress has already given hope to many suffering in silence with similar illnesses.
In India, the importance of getting professional help is difficult and the first ever mental health policy still remains to be passed through parliament. Senior consultant Gorav Gupta explained how important Padukone۪s stand is for society, ωThe message they get from her interview is that if she could fight it, then they can seek treatment too, and get better. It is not hopeless.
A study by the World Helath Organisation in 2011 had revealed that Indians are among the world۪s most depressed with Indian women being a particular focus.
