Court dismisses ZEE’s copyright plea against Sony

Bombay High Court has dismissed ZEE Entertainment Enterprise Limited’s copyright infringement plea against rival Sony Pictures Networks over the upcoming show ‘Sabse Bada Kalakar’.

ZEE had moved the court alleging that Sony Entertainment Television’s upcoming reality show is a copy of its property ‘India’s Best Dramebaaz’. Furthermore, ZEE had alleged that Sony TV copied its concept and “production bible”. The court ruled that the production bibles of the two were rather distinct.

The bench of Justice GS Patel said, “The fact that both feature children, the fact that both seek out children with acting talent, the fact that they seek out children with acting talent from different cities, and the fact that they seek out the best of these is hardly something in which anyone can claim any copyright.”

The broadcaster was told in court that the idea of the show could only claim copyright if it was “novel and original”.

‘Sabse Bada Kalakar’ launched as planned on Sony TV over the weekend.
