Television star Marc Anwar, who plays Sharif Nazir in the popular ITV series ‘Coronation Street’, has been sacked for a racist tweet about Indians.

Anwar, originally from Pakistan, took to Twitter on Friday night referring allegedly to Indian people as “b——s” and “p— drinking c—s”. His tweets, which have a privacy protection setting, have been deleted since the incident. Apparently, his tweets in came light over the unrest between India and Pakistan over the Uri attacks.

In a statement, ITV said, “We are deeply shocked by the entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc Anwar. We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect.”

Anwar’s character is in the central of a huge storyline revolving around an extra-marital affair. While writers are re-working on the script to phase out his character, he will remain on screen for a few more weeks.
