Colors acquires new films ahead of UK launch

Viacom-18’s Hindi entertainment channel, Colors, has acquired a number of huge movie blockbusters ahead of its international launch in the UK and US markets.

The channel has bought the international movie rights to some of this year’s biggest blockbusters including ‘Blue’ starring Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Kylie Minogue.

Also in a deal with UTV, the channel will share telecast with Channel 4, B4U Movies and NDTV Imagine of the following titles: ‘Kurbaan’, ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’, ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’, ‘Dev D’, ‘Kaminey’, ‘Wake Up Sid’, amongst 25 many others.

Colors has also signed a syndication deal with Tips Films to premiere this year’s superhit movie, ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’, which it will air in December In India. As per industry sources, the deal is pegged at around Rs 55 million.

A source from Colors told IndianTelevision, “We have taken the international rights as well. Even in US and UK, the Indian diaspora loves watching Hindi movies.”

Colors’ much awaited launch in the UK and US is likely to take place in February. As BizAsia.co.uk reported earlier this week, the international avatar of the channel will be known as ‘Aapka Colors’.

Colors has been finalising a launch in the UK for the past few months and is likely to sign up with either Multi Screen Media’s VIEWASIA or even ZEE Network as it has been highly speculated recently.
