As part of the Queen’s birthday honours list, the Godfather of Bhangra music, Channi Singh has been awarded an Order Of The British Empire (OBE).

The legendary singer of Alaap fame, real name – Harcharanjit Singh was recognised for his service to the Bhangra music industry, Charity and to the community in Hounslow, West London.

Talking to the BBC today, Singh expressed his surprise at the unexpected news, “I’m quite surprised actually that it has gone so big, not only in this country but also around the world. I’m very proud of the fact that I could do something to generate that interest in all the communities in what Bhangra is.”

In 2008, Malkit Singh became the first Punjabi singer to be honoured by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in London with the award of Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
