Channel 4 announces Bollywood movie season

Channel 4 has confirmed its new Bollywood season, expected to start in September as a part of the channel’s autumn schedule.

The season called ‘New Voices’ will showcase work of a new generation of Indian filmmakers who have introduced new acting talent to the screen and energised Indian film production.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Director Abbas Tyrewala, known for his work as script/dialogue writer on the hits ‘Main Hoon Na’, ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ and ‘Maqbool’, makes his directorial debut with this smart and breezy love story set in a Mumbai college.

Firaaq
Introduced by director Nandita Das, a brave new talent in Indian cinema which often shies away from politically sensitive issues.

Dev D
Dev D is introduced by director Anurag Kashyap, who talks of Danny Boyle�۪s influence on his particular style of filmmaking. Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay�۪s famous novel ‘Devdas’, this is the latest of many film versions to tackle the story of a tragic lover unable to overcome social and psychological obstacles to win his love.

Luck By Chance
Luck by Chance is introduced by director Zoya Akhtar, who is the ultimate insider, born into a family of writers, directors and actors, including her brother Farhan Akhtar, the star and producer of the film.

Manorama Six Feet Under
Manorama Six Feet Under is introduced by director Navdeep Singh, who worked as an ad-filmmaker in the US and London before moving to Mumbai.

A Wednesday
The sixth film of the New Voices season of Bollywood films is introduced by actor Anupam Kher who plays Police Commissioner Rathod. The film was written in the aftermath of the tragic July 2006 serial bombings of seven commuter trains in Mumbai.

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is introduced by director Dibakar Banerjee. In the dusty suburbs of Delhi, a lower middle class Sikh teenager, Lucky (Manjot Singh) hankers after a scooter to impress the neighbourhood girl. On finding that his father, who has taken a second wife, is unforthcoming with the funds, he swipes a motorcycle from his friend who works at a garage.

Whilst telecast details are yet to be confirmed, the broadcaster says that the films are likely to be shown around midnight in the usual Sunday/Monday night slot in standard and high definition.

The channel is also planning to run two more mini Bollywood seasons in the coming months.
