In light of the many rapes being reportedin India these days, much attention has been brought to how women are objectified in the film industry though the casting couch and item numbers. However, actress Raveena Tandon says this is “bull-crap” as women cannot be reduced or objectified through something they choose to do.

In an interview withCineBlitz, Tandon said, “All the talk about the casting couch and item numbers reducing the value of a woman and objectifying her is bull-crap. The fact ofthe matter is it is a choice, if someone tells you that you have to sleep with someone to get a role in the film, and you go ahead and do it, it is a choice you have made. You have agreed to sleep with that person, so why feel violated now? How were you violated if you consented to sleep with that person?”

Speaking further about item numbers, Tandon said that there have always been songs which are more raunchy than others. She added thatit is the choice of the actress signing the item number on whether the lyrics and dance moves are acceptable to her. Tandon praised Helen and Deepika Padukone for being a part of classy dance numbers as opposed to cheap ones.

It can be noted that Tandon herself will be seen in a dance number inAnurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’, which is slated forrelease on 15th May. She says, “It is a sensuous number but it is not sexual.”
