Box Office: ‘Padmavati’ will not release in Rajasthan

BizAsiaLive.com reported on Sunday that ‘Padmavati’ has finally got a release date, the 25th January. However, it has emerged the Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje has stated that Rajasthan will not be showcasing the film.

Reported on the TOI, Raje announced the decision in a statement, saying it was in the best interest of the people of Rajasthan. “The sacrifice of Rani Padmini is a matter of pride for the state and she is not just a chapter of history for us,” said Raje. Further adding, “Rani Padmini is our self-respect and we will not let it hurt in any case. Directions in this regard have been given to Rajasthan Home minister.”

Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria, the Rajasthan BJP chief and several Rajput organisations have also spoken out against the film.

‘Padmavat’ originally titled ‘Padmavati’ has been at the centre of much controversy from the beginning and the fate was left hanging in the air after the film could not release on its original date of 1st December 2017.

Following a screening by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), who also involved a special panel of historians that were selected to watch the film, toensure there was no distortion in the history or representation of Queen Padmini, later asked the makers to make several modifications including the title of the film.

President of the Shree Rajput Sabha, Giriraj Singh Lotwara, felt disappointed that the CBFC was favouring the film makers rather than taking on board the views of the panel. “We will give a reply to the BJP in the bypolls (in the Ajmer and Alwar Lok Sabha seats and the Mandalgarh Assembly) scheduled in the state. It will be our target to have the BJP defeated,” said Lotwara.

Rajasthan which is a BJP-led state, was attempting to crush the Rajputs. Though the president of the Rashtriya Rajput Karni said that changing the name of the film is not going to change facts, “We will not let the film release in the country. We have been protesting peacefully for the last one year. If the film is released on January 25, then theatres will burn,” said Sena Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi.

In November Raje wrote to the CBFC outlining that unless the recommendations she made to the Union Information and Broadcasting was not made, then she would uphold the release of the film Rajasthan.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures have not made an official statement on the matter as of yet, though sources say they will on the day of ‘Padmavati’ releases.

Starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles, it will be interesting to see the outcome of the epic drama.
