Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone star in this week’s only release, ‘Chennai Express’, directed by Rohit Shetty. The film released in many areas on Thursday 8th August which is the same day many celebrated Eid. Early indications show that the film is raking it in at both the domestic and overseas box offices.
On preview day, the film took over 6 crores in India which means it has smashed the records of 2009’s ‘3 Idiots’. The film is running at housefull at many locations with many cinema-goers choosing to go to the preview shows which may be a novelty somewhat for an Eid release starring a different Khan.
It remains to be seen whether ‘Chennai Express’ breaks the record currently held by ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012) of a collection of 33 crores on a single day. No doubt this will prove to be a battle of the Khans.
In the UK, ‘Chennai Express’ has been touted by UTV head Siddharth Roy Kapur as being the widest release ever for any Bollywood film in history. Stay tuned for more on collections at the overseas box office as the figures come in.
