BizAsia’s Top 5 Jodis of 2016

2016 was a year that saw many fresh pairings – some that worked and others that didn’t so much. However, it’s evident that the ones that stood out were very few. BizAsiaLive.com is looking at five jodis that wowed us this year – in no particular order.

Sidharth-Katrina in ‘Baar Baar Dekho’

Baar Baar Dekho - Katrina Kaif, Sidharth Malhotra

Although Nitya Mehra directed ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ wasn’t quite a film that did very well at the box office or with the critics, there’s no denying that Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif were one of the best looking pairs to grace the screens in 2016. They completely fit together in every way and gave way to a very fresh, youthful and good-looking package for the film overall. Although it’s not known if they will come together again, it has to be said that these two definitely wowed us.

Salman-Anushka in ‘Sultan’

This was yet another fresh twosome to hit the screens this year and it has to be said that Anushka Sharma was a particularly effective Salman Khan heroine but not in the conventional sense. Sharma’s performance was absolutely on par with Khan which is different because usually Khan’s leading ladies are usually overshadowed by him. Not only that, Khan and Sharma also looked good together with exciting building that the film made Sharma the second heroine in this generation to work with all three Khans.

Arjun-Kareena in ‘Ki & Ka’

R Balki’s ‘Ki and Ka’ was a story that broke traditions with a husband who stayed at home to support a wife who had a budding professional career. Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan came together for the first time and they looked every inch the much in love couple right from courtship to marriage. Their chemistry was arguably one of the film’s strong points and their kissing scenes were also intriguing for an audience that probably wasn’t used to such a thing in Indian cinema.

Harshvardhan-Mawra in ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’

In many reviews, it is the chemistry between Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane which saved the love story that was ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’. It was deemed as being very natural, highlighting the comfort level the two actors had with each other. Hocane’s performance was praised by many and we can only hope that she’s brought together with Rane again in another film.

Ranbir-Anushka in ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’

The last but not the least on our list of five is from the year’s most anticipated film, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. Although many would say that it was Ranbir Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s jodi that had the wow factor, we believe that the former’s pairing with Anushka Sharma was far more entertaining and pivotal to the film. With the dud that is 2015’s ‘Bombay Velvet’ to their name, director Karan Johar brought the two together in a tale of unrequited love. Their bond in the film is definitely the film’s USP and holds the story together even when it very nearly falls apart. They share some emotional, comical and dramatic scenes together, each with great ease.

There was one pairing that didn’t quite make our list but deserves a special mention. Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt looked brilliant together as they always do in ‘Kapoor and Sons’ even though the narrative didn’t focus on them so much. Their chemistry in the song ‘Kar Gayi Chull’ is to die for and we think they very much deserve to be mentioned in our list.
