BizAsia’s Must-See Summer Movies 2017

Once again, we’re upon that time of year again where summer movies are almost here. This year, there are a variety of releases expected, with some big films expected in the months to come. Whether it’s an action flick or a romantic story, Bollywood will be offering audiences a bit of everything. BizAsiaLive.com looks at the slices of cinema to come and narrows down the films to look forward to.

‘Phillauri’
Release date: 24th March
Director: Anshai Lal
*ing: Anushka Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh, Suraj Sharma
This is Anushka Sharma’s Clean Slate Films’ second home production and it’s a promising one at that. With initial promos giving off a feel of comedy and a heartfelt love story, it seems the film definitely has the potential to tick all the boxes. The soundtrack is also being appreciated and we think it deserves a place in our must-see list.

‘Sarkar 3’
Release date: 7th April
Director: Ram Gopal Varma
*ing: Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpayee, Ronit Roy, Amit Sadh, Jackie Shroff, Yami Gautam
The third instalment of the ‘Sarkar’ franchise is almost here and excitement is definitely heightened for it. The star cast has a few new additions and they seem to bring in something interesting for all to see as a development of the last two prequels. No doubt it will be interesting to see Amitabh Bachchan back in his popular role as Subhash Nagre.

‘Begum Jaan’
Release date: 14th April
Director: Srijit Mukerji
*ing: Vidya Balan, Gauahar Khan, Pallavi Sharda, Naseeruddin Shah, Chunky Panday
The trailer of ‘Begum Jaan’, produced by Vishesh Films, is something difficult to not take notice of. It’s hard-hitting and quite in-your-face. With Vidya Balan stepping into a very different role in this film, audiences will hopefully be in for a treat with her performance. The ensemble cast also promises entertainment galore.

‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’
Release date: 12th May
Director: Akshay Roy
*ing: Ayushmann Khurrana, Parineeti Chopra
Parineeti Chopra is making her comeback in this Yash Raj Films release and she’ll be seen opposite Ayushmann Khurrana for the first time. We are looking forward to seeing this fresh jodi grace the big screens and the fact that they are both lending their vocals to the film’s album is also something we are waiting eagerly for.

‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’
Release date: 2nd June
Director: Shree Narayan Singh
*ing: Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar
With a name like it has, audiences should expect that ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ to have a unique message. Akshay Kumar is coming together with Bhumi Pednekar and initial stills from the film that have been shared on social media suggest an interesting film all round.

‘Raabta’
Release date: 9th June
Director: Dinesh Vijan
*ing: Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon
‘Raabta’ has to be one of the most awaited films, not just because of the new pairing of Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon that are starring in it. Their chemistry is there for all to see right from the first look tests and the out-and-out romance genre is something that is somewhat scarce in B-town. This Dinesh Vijan directorial should deliver on this.

‘Secret Superstar’
Release date: 4th August
Director: Advait Chandan
*ing: Aamir Khan (cameo), Meher Vij, Zaira Wasim
Aamir Khan has backed his ex-manager Advait Chandan’s directorial debut, ‘Secret Superstar’. The film hold much promise and to see Khan in his special appearance is something many will be excited about. He will also be seen sharing the screen with his ‘Dangal’ (2016) co-star Zaira Wasim in the film, where her character has musical aspirations.

‘Bhoomi’
Release date: 4th August
Director: Omung Kumar
*ing: Sanjay Dutt, Aditi Rao Hydari
Although ‘Bhoomi’ has faced a few huddles, it’s finally underway. Sanjay Dutt will be marking his on-screen comeback in the film. The story reportedly surrounds the relationship of a father and daughter. Omung Kumar is directing the film, after the biopic ‘Sarbjit’ last year which received mixed reviews.

Imtiaz Ali’s next
Release date: 11th August
Director: Imtiaz Ali
*ing: Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma
This is probably the one film that most people are most waiting for during the summer period. Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma are reuniting after 2012’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ under the directorship of Imtiaz Ali. The first look of the film looks promising and the pairing has always been popular. Many will be waiting with anticipation for this romantic story.

‘Reload’
Release date: 25th August
Director: Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK
*ing: Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez
If there’s one action flick that seems that could well be worth watching during summer, it’s ‘Reload’. It’s been denied that it’s a sequel to Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Bang Bang’ (2014) but the action element is definitely something similar. The rather good-looking pair of Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez will also be gracing the screen together for the first time. Their chemistry is one to look our for.

As always, there are some films that don’t quite fit into our list but they deserve a mention nonetheless. The first of these films is ‘Noor’. Sonakshi Sinha is playing a journalist and the story is based on the Pakistani novel ‘Karachi You’re Killing Me’. The base has been shifted in the film from Karachi to Mumbai and it definitely looks like a good watch from the initial trailers and glimpses of the soundtrack. It’s slated to release on 21st April.

‘Jagga Jasoos’ remains in our special mentions this time round too, as it’s still scheduled to release on 7th April. There have been reports that the film might not even see release this year but until official confirmation arrives, noone will know the extent of the delay. Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are coming together in this film, the first trailer of which received very mixed reviews. Nonetheless, it seems like a great adventure with Anurag Basu giving a slight glimpse of 2012’s ‘Barfi’ too.

‘Half Girlfriend’ is also a promising film to look forward to, starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name. The first looks have proved interesting and no doubt the trailer will be well received. The film is slated for release on 19th May.

‘Crack’ is the last special mention on our list. With Akshay Kumar playing protagonist and Neeraj Pandey directing the film, it is definitely one that’s heavily anticipated. It’s said to be set for an August release and promises success as Kumar and Pandey come together once more.

Well, this is where our list comes to an end. We hope we’ve covered the films you’re all looking forward to in the coming months. Here’s to a hugely successful six months before the end of year films kick in to create even more excitement and furore.
