HNY KANIKA KAPOOR AND DR ZEUS 8 400x
Kanika Kapoor performs with Dr Zeus at 'HNY' music launch

You’ve just performed at the ‘Happy New Year’ music launch. Can you reveal what the buzz was like there during the event?

Yes, just finishing the launch. My God, it’s been crazy. It’s quite exciting actually to see that a song and work you’ve been working on for a long time, something you’ve put your heart and soul into, coming out. It’s phenomenal as the film has such a huge star cast.

How did you feel seeing Deepika Padukone in your song, Lovely?

It’s wonderful. She’s sensational in the song, the way she’s danced… I hope everybody likes my vocals. The song audio is already out there and the full video will be out very soon.

Lovely is a song in which you’re working once again with Dr Zeus. We understand it’s a song you had already worked on and it was then presented to Shah Rukh Khan for the film?

Yes. Because of Babydoll, more doors have opened and I met Shah Rukh Khan through industry friends. I’m doing a lot of work with a lot of producers and directors but, of course, Dr Zeus is someone I started my career with and we’re still doing some fun stuff together and it’s good. With him, it’s like he’s like a brother to me, my family. We know each other really well; I’ve known him for over six years now.

Can you tell us a bit more about the remix of Lovely in the soundtrack?

Yes, we’ve got a version called Kamlee which was the original version of the song which was just me and Dr Zeus. There’s going to be a couple of remixes that you will get to hear very soon.

Will there be any music videos accompanying those remixes?

I wouldn’t like to comment on that just yet but I’m hoping that there will be.

You have done some modelling as well as playback singing. Is that a bit of a juggle?

Well, it’s not exactly modelling. I’ve been a muse for a lot of brands. I’ve done it for a bit of fun actually. Modelling has not really been my career. I’m predominantly a singer and that’s my forte and everything else comes with it.

If you had any acting offers come your way, would you take them up?

Well, it depends who with. I haven’t really thought about it. Right now, I’m concentrating on the SLAM Tour I’m going on with Shah Rukh Khan and everybody.

We’re finishing in London on 5th October. The next 15 days are quite choc-o-block with that and then we’ll see how Lovely does and how things go but it’s all very exciting.

The SLAM Tour will be essentially one of your first concerts on such a big scale in the UK. Will it be a particularly special performance?

Well, almost 10 years ago I was at The O2 watching a concert and it was my dream that I wanted to be there with Shah Rukh Khan. I can’t believe that I’m actually going to be on that stage with Shah Rukh Khan. It truly is a dream come true and I am truly thankful to God for it.

Did you always have Bollywood dreams?

Of course. As an artiste, you only want to do Bollywood because the kind of exposure you get as a playback singer is on another level. Even now, I’m doing a lot of singles but also a lot of Bollywood. A lot of movies will have my music and my vocals. As an artiste you want to just put good music out there more than anything.

You are going to be performing at the Pratham UK charity event on 4th October too. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Well, I’ve been signed as an ambassador for Pratham UK and the cause is very close to my heart and I hope that it does well. I’m really excited to perform at the Natural History Museum; it’s my first time.

Lastly, you have many fans out there. Do you have a message for them?

Well, definitely. I’d like to tell them that where there’s a will, there’s a way. If I can do it then anyone can do it. Go out there and work hard and live your dream because life is too short. You’ve really got to do what you feel like doing and what makes you happy in life.

BizAsia thanks Kanika Kapoor for taking the time to speak to us. She will be performing with the ‘Happy New Year’ team in both America and in London so be sure to look out for her.
