BizAsia Music Review: ‘Pink’

Bengali film director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury is making his Bollywood debut with Pink۪. This serious courtroom drama looks sensational in trailers thanks to the brilliance of the great Amithabh Bachchan playing a lawyer in this really powerful and intense piece of cinema that one can۪t wait to watch! Shantanu Moitra has been put in-charge of the music which might not be as exciting as this film۪s script doesn۪t look like one there is a lot of room for singing and dancing. But what Moitra is known for is good productions and what he does with the music of Pink۪ would be quite interesting to hear. Music contributions also include from Faiza Mujahid & Anupam Roy.

Amitabh Bachchan - Pink

Making her Bollywood debut, Pakistani rock chick Faiza Mujahid does bring a party atmosphere to this rather dark and dramatic film with Jeenay De Mujhe. Writter, composed and even sung by her this girl has some personality and unique aspects to her voice and style. She gives this free spirited female lead song the party feel in a very different way than what commercial Bollywood is used to. The soft rock composition works very well for this song about fun and friendship between three girls in the film. The lyrics are all about enjoyment, freedom and living life to the full. Her vocal is nothing great as such but her voice has a unique texture to it which is very favourable to the rock setup of the song. A very different but good song that should give considerable variety to radio playlists if it picks up which it hopefully should.

Kaari Kaari is produced by the brilliant Moitra with the lyrics of Tanveer Ghazi. The song is truly captivating. It’s a sad song with its intensity is all about the dark cloudy times of life. Ghazi۪s lyrics are poetically strong and very simply but powerfully worded. Moitra۪s composition is exquisite. The instrumentation on the song is brilliant, right from the piano to Carnatic sitar to violin ensemble. For the stanza۪s it even picks up into soft rock music. The best part are the transitions of how he moves between musical pieces which is the work of a musical maestro. To top the intensity is the vocal of Pakistani singer Qurat-Ul-Ain Balouch. The traditional and rustic voice texture that she has with depth it truly is haunting. But her control and vocal presence is truly commendable. This is a really good song overall but considering it is a situational background song and not commercial as such, it is not going to be a superhit but truly is a great song.

Tujhse Hi Hai Roshni is completely the work of Bengali musician Anupam Roy. What attracts first is his vocal which is really good. He sure has a soft romantic touch to his vocal with a decent range as he works his way through his romantic lyrics. There would not be a romantic situation it this courtroom drama but possibly the song is about love between three good friends. The music is quite full and has a good melody to it with the song mainly riding on piano and keyboard work with background drums and bass guitar. A decent romantic song that is good to late night calming music on the radio.

Taapsee Pannu, Amitabh Bachchan - Pink 340x

The title song Pink is written by Irshad Kamil and composed by Anupam Roy. Sung by Jonita Gandhi and rapper EPR Iyer, this is perhaps the worst song on the album. The song is boring as hell and one of the worst vocal performances and clich̩d rubbish arrangement. Roy is trying too hard here and lands by ruining the lyrics with his below average work on this song that sounds like it has been produced in his bedroom. This is a bad song even for a title track of a low budget film.

FINAL WORD

The soundtrack for Pink۪ is as expected and lacks any commercial aspects to it. It is a good soundtrack for background music of an intense courtroom drama film but doesn۪t stand on its own to deliver any hit numbers. Musically it has some good songs with good talented signers from across the border. Faiza Mujahid and Qarat Ul Ain Balouch stand out from the rest and deliver really good vocals especially Jeeney De Mujhe which is the big song on the album. Shantanu Moitra is the ace composer on the album with the song Kaari Kaari which is the best composition on the album overall. Anumap Roy impresses on Tujhse Hi Hai Roshni but then royally disappoints on Pink Title Track. There is not enough variety on the album to classify is a decent Bollywood soundtrack but considering what the film is about, this OST does the job.
