Bollywood superstar Kareena Kapoor Khan was given an accolade for her work in Bollywood at London۪s House of Commons. In attendance were dignitaries from the world of British politics including members ofBradford Metropolitan District Council. Also being honoured alongside the actress were Bradford-born celebritiesDynamo(AKA Steven Frayne,Dynamo: Magician Impossible) alongsideKimberley Walsh(singer-songwriter, model, television presenter, actress and band member of Girls Aloud).

Upon receiving her award, Kapoor Khan said: I have prepared a speech as this is the first time I have come to the House of Commons, apart from coming here casually. Last night when I was sitting with my husband (Saif Ali Khan), I told him that I was coming here and being honoured. He looked at me and was like well I studied in England, I have been to Winchester and I haven۪t been honoured, why are they honouring you? So I said, yes probably because they think my work is more interesting.

There۪s always been a special relationship between India and England and over the years, I think the bond has just grown stronger. For all the Indians spread all over the world, the UK is one place where we Indians feel like we are at home. It is one my most favourite places to film a movie, not because the Government offers us 40% on rebate tax (laughs) but also because everyone is so helpful and kind. Thank the human being who created Selfridges, that is one of favourite places to shop. It is also one of my most amazing places to just come.

I think my family and England have a deep affinity. My great grandmother was British. My father in law was the first Indian to captain the cricket team at Oxford University. Saif was in Winchester and Jennifer Kendal was married to Shashi Kapoor. Then, of course, there is me who neither went to school or college in London but ended up at Madame Tussauds.

I want to thank everyone who made this occasion so wonderful for me. I am happy that it was so casual so you can all get to know me better.

The event was truly a special occasion for the Bollywood industry and for Kareena Kapoor being honoured in this way. The actress will soon be seen in her upcoming film Gori Tere Pyaar Mein۪alongside fellow actor Imran Khan, releasing later on this month.

BizAsia had the opportunity to interview Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan about ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’ – stay tuned for more coverage.
