BizAsia Birthday Love: Madhuri Dixit & the aspirations of her characters

After a break of four years Madhuri Dixit returns with the much awaited film ‘Bucket List’. This will be her first film in Marathi and from the trailer it is visible how comfortable she is while speaking the language. The film follows a housewife who decides to complete a bucket list and while doing so discovers so much about herself.

On the 15th May Dixit will be celebrating her 51st birthday and to mark this occasion BizAsiaLive.com will explore five films in which her characters have some sort of aspirations.

‘Saajan’ (1991)
Pooja (Dixit) lives with her mother and helps her in the book store that they own. If there is anything that excites Pooja then that is poetry and not just by any poet, it has to be by Sagar (Sanjay Dutt). Her biggest wish is to meet the poet and see if he is like how she imagined him to be. Her obsession is such that she often writes to the poet and sometimes performs on Sagar’s poetry in front of many people in her town.

She dreams of meeting Sagar one day and has even expressed this to him via a letter but she is unaware that he is actually not that far away from her.

‘Anjaam’ (1994)
Shivani (Dixit) has a caring side to her who after quitting her job of an air hostess begins to volunteer at a hospital. When her husband questions her as to why she needs to do this, she explains that it isn’t for money and that while her husband is away for work and their daughter is at school, it gives her something to do.

She shows him a child who couldn’t move at all but with her love and dedication he has slowly started to make progress. She wishes that with the life she has she can make a difference to someone’s life and if she can achieve this she would be very lucky.

‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (1997)
Pooja (Dixit) has a belief that someone somewhere has been made for her and the same goes for everybody. She is a happy go lucky girl and tries to please people wherever she goes.

When her friend’s marriage has been arranged she can’t get her head around the situation. She asks her how can she marry a man she doesn’t know and rather than just marrying anyone she should just wait for her soul mate. Her friend replies that maybe he is her soul mate but they just don’t know it yet. Pooja dreams of her prince charming and awaits the moment he will whisk her away.

‘Aaja Nachle’ (2007)
While living in America Dia (Dixit) has managed to make a career out of something she loves, which is dancing. She teaches various styles of dance and is completely engrossed in this life of hers. One day she receives a call from India where she is asked to return and help fulfil her mentor’s last wish. Many years ago, Dia along with her friends would practise dance under the guidance of their mentor. The location which they would practise at is now at risk of being knocked down and built into a hotel.

Dia makes it her goal to save this location and at the same time change the mind set of the people in the town who see dance and performing as something bad.

‘Gulaab Gang’ (2014)
Rajjo (Dixit) wishes that all the girls in her village could be educated and dreams that one day they can all go to a proper school where they can study. She tries to do her bit by educating the girls for free and teaches them how to defend themselves so that they can protect themselves in a dangerous situation. She also offers shelter to women who have suffered abuse at the hands of others.

She knows the value of education because as a child she had to fight to get educated when her step mother tried stopped her. A time comes when she along with her friend go to various places to ask for funding in order to build a school.

The team at BizAsiaLive.com wishes Madhuri Dixit a very happy birthday and all the best for her upcoming film ‘Bucket List’ which releases on the 25th May.
