Birthday wishes: Kareena Kapoor’s memorable dance numbers

It is fair to say that Kareena Kapoor is definitely celebrating her birthday with a bang this year. With her pending wedding to Saif Ali Khan in the coming month and her big film release of Heroine۪ alongside her birthday, she has the world at her feet. Being the little sister of Bollywood bombshell Karisma Kapoor has not affected her making her ownmark on the industry with her unique outlook on her films. She is not afraid to take on what would be deemed to be risky roles, be it the lady of the night in Chameli۪ (2003) to the actress desperately trying to hold on to her fame in the upcoming release Heroine۪, which releases today. As she sees in her birthday at the peak of her career, BizAsia looks at all her dance numbers that have had the world dancing to her tunes and wishes Kareena Kapoor a very Happy Birthday!

Rang De Dupatta Mera Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai۪ (2001)

Although this film didn۪t dotoo well at the box office, Kapoor۪s dance number on Rang De Dupatta Mera brought the film industry to attention. Her red catsuit and purple number had the actress looking sensual and sexy as she moved to the music, it was no wonder co-star Tusshar Kapoor looks mesmerised in the song. The tune was performed as part of a college show in the film but it became a favourite on the dance floor for many people worldwide. The music for this film was composed by Anu Malik and the lyrics were written by Sameer.

Bhaage Re Mann Chameli۪ (2003)

Chameli۪ really made the film industry take notice of Kapoor who played a hard done prostitute in the film and totally revamped herself for the role. It was hard to even get that it was the actress playing this role as she immersed herself in the character, changing her language, personality and even her usually glamorous look for this film. She was required to learn how to smoke for the role and did it without complaint. Bhaage Re Mann is a melodious track which sees the character of ‘Chameli’ dance through the streets in the classic wet sari. Sunidhi Chauhan vocals suited the actress perfectly and it is a number that still receives radio play till this day.

Yeh Mera Dil Don۪ (2006)

Don۪ is the film that starred King Khan Shah Rukh Khan as the lead hero/villain and was meant to be film to see for his action hero status. Though the film was a remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan version, the director went one further and re-enacted the classic Yeh Mera Dil, originally performed by Helen in the film Don۪ (1978). Helen is the classic item girl for the Bollywood industry and to emulate her would be difficult or even said to be impossible. However, Kapoor proved the impossible to be possible and shook the world when the trailers hit the airwaves. Her sultry look in a gold sequinned dress and her seduction techniques tempting Don (Shah Rukh Khan) even had the audience under her spell.

It۪s Rocking Kya Love Story Hai۪ (2007)

This film was the first time that Kapoor did an item number for a filmthat did not have her starring in at all, apart from this guest appearance. The song It۪s Rocking was a compilation of the film Naya Daur۪ (1957) song Ude Jab Jab Zulfen Teri which was pictured on Vyjayanthimala. While there was a trend for Bollywood songs being remixed in 2007, this song It۪s Rocking gained critical acclaim due to the fact that it starred Kapoor looking as amazing as always.

Yeh Ishq Hai Jab We Met۪ (2007)

Jab We Met۪ was a refreshing to say the least when it came to Bollywood films in 2007. While most the industry were hungering after film remakes, this film bought back the traditional love story to our screens. Though the film starred Shahid Kapoor as the hero, Kareena۪s character of feisty Punjabi girl Geet stole the audience۪s hearts. This song Yeh Ishq Hai was filmed in Northern India with the dances based on the culture of the region. Kareena۪s hyper personality shown in this song was a perfect complement to Shreya Ghoshal۪s vocals, creating another chart-topping number.

Chhaliya Tashan۪ (2008)

Who can forget the controversy that engulfed Kapoor at the release of this film? It was all about the actress when the film hit the big screen and is said to have been the real starting point of her real life romance of co-star in the film, Saif Ali Khan. It was well reported that the actress was persuaded by the director of this film to do a bikini shot and she was put on a strict diet to get down to a size zero for the part. As a result, Kapoor۪s look in Chhaliya was viewed with great interest where the actress was seen wearing short skirts and shorts and a bikini.

Bebo Kambakkht Ishq۪ (2009)

Fresh from her item number in Tashan۪, the actress was again persuaded to do another but this time her nickname Bebo. This song started a trend of actresses doing songs under their real names, even though their film names were totally different. Kapoor seduces her co-star in the film, Akshay Kumar, wearing a short pink sequinned dress and then changes into black nightdress. In the film, the actress played a successful model and Kapoor once again proved that she was one of the most glamorous actresses in Bollywood.

Marjaani Billu۪ (2009)

Billu۪ had many actresses doing the dance numbers including the likes of Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. However Kapoor proved herself once again in a very Arabic feeling number Marjaani alongside Shah Rukh Khan. She looked beautiful in a white and blue number not missing a beat with the dance steps and looking her best in the long flowing numbers. This film did not do as well as hoped but this song still lives on with audiences singing along to this upbeat tune.

Chammak Challo Ra.One۪ (2011)

Though this film did not do as well as expected at the box office, this song۪s tremendous success has to be commended. This song was one of the first Bollywood songs sung in Hindi by an international pop singer, Akon and was the trademark for the publicity of Ra.One۪. Kapoor۪s look in this song was raved about who wore a red sari draped as a dhoti, which was designed by Manish Mahotra. While her look was raved about, her part in the song alongside Shah Rukh Khan was also applauded with her South Indian dance moves being perfect for the song.

Dil Mera Muft Ka Agent Vinod۪ (2012)

Starring alongside her beau Saif Ali Khan should have been a great source of comfort for Kapoor but the actress was very nervous to perform the song Dil Mera Muft Ka. It was the first for the actress to perform a Mujra style dance and despite her beautiful look in the film; she did not know how the song would be received. The song was well received for this film but it was clear to see that Kapoor worked hard to perfect her look and performance on this song.

Her item number, Halkat Jawani, for Heroine۪ (2012) has hit our screens andit is clear to see that the actress is at her best. She looks amazing in this song and we look forward to seeing how well she fares in the film. Good luck for the future and we wish you all the best from BizAsia. Happy Birthday to the ultimate Bollywood heroine, Kareena Kapoor!
