Birthday Love: Zeenat Aman’s shades through songs

It was quite rare to have a song picturised on this actress and it not become a big hit. In fact there are so many memorable films that she has worked in that her fans can’t help but wish she would return to films.

19th November is the birthday of the forever beauty queen Zeenat Aman. To celebrate her birthday BizAsiaLive.com will look at five songs that display various sides to Aman’s characters.

The dreamer- Aap Jaisa Koi from ‘Qurbani’ (1980)
The late Nazia Hassan made a start to her singing career with this song and what luck she had. The song was a super hit and Aman had the pleasure of having this song picturised on her twice in the film. The first time this song is played the audience is introduced to Sheela (Aman) who is a dancer in a club where she sings this song for her beloved Rajesh (Feroz Khan). The second time she sings it Amar (Vinod Khanna) sees Aman and is mesmerized by her. In the song Sheela sings about how if only someone like Rajesh came into her life then her life would be set therefore the title dreamer seems adequate.

The revenge seeker- Jiska Mujhe Tha Intezaar from ‘Don’ (1978)
Roma (Aman) was the revenge seeking woman who wanted Don (Amitabh Bachchan) to pay for her brother’s death. In this song the audience sees two sides to Roma, one is the angry sister who hates Don while the other is a beautiful woman whose magic begins to work on Vijay (Bachchan) and he can’t help but fall for her.

The lyrics explain the pain and grief that Roma is feeling and at the same time speak about love. The people around her think she is singing for Don but Aman’s expressions made it very clear what Roma is actually trying to say. Lata Mangeshkar helped to express Roma’s feelings melodiously.

The carefree hippie -Dum Maaro Dum from ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ (1971)
There were some that thought this song should be remixed but there were many who loved the original and felt it was the wrong move. Anushka Manchanda sang for Deepika Padukone in the 2011 film ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ but sadly even this couldn’t help save the remix. The original song was sung by Asha Bhosle while the music was created by Rahul Dev Burman. It is said that Bhosle had won the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for the song.

A very young Aman became a star with this film with her carefree nature, her innocent talks and her love for freedom. When this song is remembered one can instantly picture Aman in a bright pink kurta with a marigold necklace around her neck. A busy atmosphere surrounded by many hippies and a lot of smoke the song was iconic but perhaps it wouldn’t have been the same without Aman.

The flirt – Tum Kitne Din Baad Mile from ‘The Great Gambler’ (1979)
The film consisted of actors such as Bachchan, Neetu Singh and Prem Chopra alongside Aman. The lyrics in this song revolved around Aman’s character Shabnam and the complaints she had against Jai (Bachchan). The song was sung beautifully by Asha Bhosle while Aman was charming.

Shabnam expresses her love while trying to help Jai escape from the terrible situation he is in. Mala (Singh) somewhat feels threatened by Shabnam’s presence and her closeness with Jai not knowing the story between the two. Aman showed many emotions from flirting to anxiousness as well as love. Aman simply lit up the screen up with her presence.

The graceful lady – Aankhon Ka Salaam Lo from ‘Samraat’ (1982)
In this song Aman is seen performing with some back up dancers for a guest that has arrived. Both Amjad Khan and Mazhar Khan are besotted by Aman and find it hard to keep their eyes off of her. The lyrics themselves speak with etiquette aankhon ka salaam lo, haathon mein jam lo, take the greetings from my eyes and take a drink in your hand. Aman would be seen gracefully greeting the guest and pouring them a drink.

Jeetendra was also seen in the song with Aman, it was a catchy number that had various singers collaborate from Mangeshkar to Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey.

Aman was always a great dancer and in this song not only did she perform really well but her glamorous avatar was eye catching.

BizAsiaLive.com wishes Zeenat Aman a happy birthday.
