Birthday Love: Sushmita Sen’s unforgettable performances

Rising to stardom after winning the Miss Universe title in 1994 and becoming an actress thereafter, Sushmita Sen has managed to stay on top of her game ever since. Having been very selective with the films she’s taken on, Sen has ensured her filmography is made up of a wide range of characters, genres and storylines.

As she celebrates her 46th Birthday, BizAsiaLive.com looks at some of the actress’s most unforgettable roles.

Rupali – ‘Biwi No1’ (1999)
Sharing the screen with the likes of Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu and Anil Kapoor, Sen took on a role that many of that time would turn away. The comedy about an extra-marital affair, Sen plays the glamorous other woman, who despite being an unlikable character, audiences fell in love with. Sen immediately displayed incredible talent through her performance, where she shined through so much, it became her first award-winning performance.

Sia Seth – ‘Filhaal’ (2002)
Taking on another project with Tabu, where this time they play best friends, ‘Filhaal’ was thought-provoking and addressed the subject of surrogacy which was still a taboo subject at the time. The audience loved the chemistry between the two actresses who played best friends, which made it all the more heartfelt in seeing their characters go through the intensities of bearing children in the way. With her performance, Sen encouraged the audience to invest in her character’s journey as a surrogate, bringing the realities of such an act to the surface.

Neha Shriwasta – ‘Aankhen’ (2002)
Vipul Amratlal Shah’s ‘Aankhen’ sparked huge interest in many action film lovers. The story of three blind men robbing a bank on the orders of a bitter man seeking revenge,is what got viewers walking through the theatre doors, however it was Sen’s performance as their trainer who had everyone wide-eyed and glued to the screen. Playing as much of the victim in the film, it’s her they all want to see succeed. The character of Neha comes with a bag of mixed and intense emotions, and Sen’s ability to portray a woman’s strength adds to this stand out performance.

Miss Chandni – ‘Main Hoon Na’ (2004)
Moving from choreographer to director, Farah Khan Kunder did everything right with her directorial debut ‘Main Hoon Na’, and casting Sen as the glamorous teacher Miss Chandni was definitely one of them. Her chemistry with Shah Rukh Khan was electric, her comical timing was perfect and she lit up the screen every time she showed. Though she had very little to do with the main storyline, Sen was the perfect addition to the cast, and a favourite amongst audiences.

Aarya Sareen – ‘Aarya’ (2020)
With OTT platforms paving the way for directors, writers, and producers to become more creative with their projects, Sen’s debut on the web series ‘Aarya’ was the perfect move into taking on yet another thought-provoking role. After her husband is shot in an attempted murder case, Aarya’s search for the truth begins to unfold in ways beyond her imagination could ever take her. Having been one of Hotstar’s most watched series, Sen’s performance is impeccable. Gripping her viewers from the beginning, it’s her own character development that keeps them on the edge of their seats. Yet another award-winning performance, Sen is unforgettable, where she makes viewers want more. And they will get more in the upcoming season.

Sen has always remained true to herself, where the choices she makes from her professional life to her personal life has always sparked curiosity.
