Birthday love: Sunidhi Chauhan’s best songs of the decade

She got noticed at the young age of four and today, as the turns 30, Sunidhi Chauhan has made quite a name for herself. If there is one word that she could be described as, it’s versatile. From soulful slow jams to upbeat youthful numbers, Chauhan is almost the epitome of variety. Her voice suits a wide generation of actresses right from Rekha in Kaisi Paheli from ‘Parineeta’ (2005) to the more recent��Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari of ‘Chennai Express’ (2013) pictured on Deepika Padukone, Chauhan’s talent is hard to ignore. As she celebrates her birthday, BizAsia take a trip down memory lane and look at some of her most popular songs in the last decade.

Bhaage Re Mann – ‘Chameli’ (2004)

This slow number from the Kareena Kapoor starrer ‘Chameli’ is popular even today what with it’s melodious and heart-warming lyrics. Chauhan manages to to give Kapoor’s character the innocence she requires but at the same time remaining a little sensual in all the right places.

Kaisi Paheli – ‘Parineeta’ (2005)

Kaisi Paheli, picturised on the beautiful Rekha, is perhaps one of Chauhan’s most memorable songs. The cabaret style is made even more extravagant with the style that Chauhan brings to the song and her attitude quotient was easily one of the most endearing points to the era in which the film was set.

Beedi Jalaile – ‘Omkara’ (2006)

Bipasha Basu and the rest of the cast of ‘Omkara’ truly made Beedi Jalaile come alive but it wouldn’t be the massive hit it proved to be without the perfect voice to accompany – the voice of Chauhan. Once again, her versatile persona paid tribute to a dialect that this originally Shakespearean plot the sexiness it needed at such a crucial time in the story.

Sajnaji Vaari Vaari – ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd’ (2007)

It is safe to say that many will remember this song more than they will remember the film because Chauhan’s Sajnaji Vaari Vaari was indeed one of the biggest hits of 2007. High-spirited, multi-starcast including and energetic are words that describe the song to a tee and Chauhan showed once again that she was indeed the queen of the upbeat number.

Aaja Nachle – ‘Aaja Nachle’ (2007)

To sing the signature song of the comeback film of Bollywood’s most loved actress is indeed quite a mean feat. Many would have questioned whether Chauhan’s youthful voice would suit Madhuri Dixit-Nene but it Salim-Sulaiman would have had the faith that noone else could have done justice to the title track of ‘Aaja Nachle’ quite like Chauhan. The song is one of the most popular of Dixit-Nene’s career in recent years.

Desi Girl – ‘Dostana- (2008)

What can be said about a song which brings generations together in praise? Desi Girl picturised on the beautiful Priyanka Chopra and also Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham is an evergreen track which will be remembered forever. Chauhan’s western influences came to the forefront with this song which, it is safe to say, will have Indian/Desi girls feel proud for generations to come.

Chor Bazaari – ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009)

It’s bindaas, it’s a little mischievous and, more importantly, it is a song that is about a break-up. In an unconventional way, Chor Bazaari seems to touch the dancer in everyone to get them swaying side by side. Chauhan lends her vocals to Deepika Padukone and proves that her prowess for the dance numbers.

Udi – ‘Guzaarish’ (2010)

To sing playback for the most beautiful woman in the world is indeed something to be proud of. However, Chauhan’s rendition of Udi gives Rai Bachchan’s beauty another level altogether. The song, filmed as if a complete spontaneous action, is passionate and sees Rai Bachchan in a sensuous form. Chauhan’s voice is the basis of the song’s charm.

Ainvayi Ainvayi – ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ (2010)

When one thinks of Ainvayi Ainvayi, one instantly remembers Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh’s chemistry and the innovative lyrics. One also remembers the voices of Chauhan and Salim Merchant in playback. Undoubtedly the song is one of the best club-dance numbers in recent times and Chauhan’s mischievous self gives it the charisma it needs to be popular with the masses.

Ishq Sufiyana – ‘The Dirty Picture’ (2011)

Chauhan has been nominated for and won awards for the female version of Ishq Sufiyana and well-deservedly at that. Those that had her down as the best for the buoyant numbers may be extremely pleasantly surprised with her performance in this song. Beautiful would be an understatement as Chauhan continues to show that she is able to carry off even the most romantic numbers with ease.
