Birthday Love: Shah Rukh Khan & his most popular leading ladies

When one thinks of Shah Rukh Khan, romance is not far behind as he’s known as the ultimate romantic hero. He’s romanced a number of well-known heroines but there have been some which have stuck out in his career spanning decades.

BizAsiaLive.com looks at five of the actor’s leading ladies which have created the most memorable pairings with him on screen.

Kajol
With Kajol, Khan has had so many successful films but the one that stands out and which created history is ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995). Aside from this there’s also the likes of ‘Karan Arjun’ (1995), ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ 1998) and ‘My Name is Khan’ (2010) to name a few. In ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ (2001) they are seen as a pair but perhaps one of the funniest in the second half of the film as their comic moments when in London really can tickle that funny bone. Ultimately, they are known as one of the ultimate jodis of this generation and you only need to watch one of their films to see why, and that also includes the most recent ‘Dilwale’ (2015).

Juhi Chawla
Khan and Juhi Chawla have been a “thing” as early as 1992’s ‘Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’ when they were first seen together on screen. Since then they’ve also had a number of films together such as ‘Yes Boss’ (1997), ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ (2000) and also ‘Darr’ (2003). That list is by no means extensive. What they’ve managed in all instances is a cute and innocent love story, no matter what kind of roles they were seen in. This is something of a pull they both bring to the audience which makes them iconic on screen.

Rani Mukerji
The on-screen pair of Rani Mukerji and Khan gives way to some pretty emotional storylines and films – be that unrequited love in ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, extra-marital love in ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ (2006), marital love which sees obstacles in ‘Chalte Chalte’ (2003) and also the relationship of a prisoner and his lawyer in ‘Veer-Zaara’ (2008). They’ve really explored some mature storylines in the films they’ve done together and this provides a certain uniqueness to them which perhaps any other leading lady of Khan’s doesn’t necessary have.

Madhuri Dixit
Khan and Madhuri Dixit have provided audiences some of the most interesting romantic stories – be that in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (1997), ‘Anjaam’ (1994), ‘Koyla’ (1997) or even ‘Devdas’ (2002). They’ve always been so fantastic on screen together, no matter the nature of their roles in the films they’ve done together, that their chemistry has shown in every scene.

Preity Zinta
Although she hasn’t done quite as many movies with Khan as the others on this list, Preity Zinta has had some great movies with the actor in her career, starting from her debut in ‘Dil Se’ (1998). She went on to do films such as ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ (2003), Kabhi Alvia Naa Kehna’ and ‘Veer-Zaara’. All of these were great successes, and gave Khan someone who was a little quirky where his other leading ladies may have been seen as a little “perfect” on screen. Zinta’s characters in the films were a very strong-headed and this gave her a little edge as a leading lady.

Here’s wishing Shah Rukh Khan a very happy birthday, from Team BizAsia!
