Saif Ali Khan is one of the most evergreen actors in Bollywood. He is one actor who has transitioned from a romantic hero from the 1990s to a romantic hero of recent day and there is a real charm about him on the big screen. This year, though he has not had a film released yet, Khan has got a big year ahead of him as he becomes father to his first child with wife and fellow actress Kareena Kapoor Khan. In addition to his acting talents, Khan has also forged a successful career on screen as a presenter, presenting at several award ceremonies and TV shows.

To mark Khan’s birthday, BizAsia looks at his five most memorable films he has made his own.

Yeh Dillagi۪ (1994)

Yeh Dillagi

Yeh Dillagi۪ was one of Khan۪s earliest successes, which put him on the map as a romantic hero in Bollywood. In the film, Khan played Vikram (Vicky) Saigal, an heir to Saigal Industries, who enjoys his life womanising and refuses to be like his brother Vijay Saigal (Akshay Kumar) who is committed to the family business. Sapna (Kajol), daughter of the family۪s driver, returns from abroad after forging a successful career as a model and immediately catches Vicky۪s eye. He starts to fall for her but Sapna still sees herself as the driver۪s daughter and cannot overlook Vicky۪s affairs. This is where the story ensues as the two brothers try to win Sapna۪s attention. It was a great film with a touching story and set Khan up for his future success.

Main Khiladi Tu Anari۪ (1994)

Main Khiladi Tu Anari

1994 was Khan۪s year as he also won critical acclaim as an action hero. In Main Khiladi Tu Anari۪, Khan played Deepak Kumar, a romantic actor who is fed up of his remedial life. He gets drunk and gets arrested by Karan (Akshay Kumar) who impresses Deepak with his assertiveness. Deepak decides to study Karan as background research for his future roles. This was an action packed film and it was declared a super hit by the cinemas. The songs for the film also made the radio waves and are still played to this day.

Hum Saath-Saath Hain۪ (1999)

Hum Saath Saath Hain - Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor

Hum Saath-Saath Hain۪ can be called one of Khan۪s biggest commercial successes. The film boasted an ensemble cast with the likes of Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre, Tabu, Mohnish Bahl and many others. Though the film was released in 1999, it still held the values of a good family focused Bollywood film and really enraptured the audience. The film told the story of a joint family in India where the family has three sons who are all due to be married. Khan played Vinod, the middle brother, who lives in his own dream world and is obsessed with getting married to Sapna (Karisma Kapoor).

Dil Chahta Hai۪ (2001)

'Dil Chahta Hai'
‘Dil Chahta Hai’

Dil Chahta Hai۪ is a film which marked Khan۪s evolution into a modern day actor who refreshed his image and came across as a trendy coming of age actor. His look in this film was very young and fresh and he astounded audiences with this film. Dil Chahta Hai۪ told the story of three best friends who leave college vowing that nothing will break them apart. Khan played hopeless romantic Sameer who was always falling in love with different girls and finding himself in sticky situations. The film was told with a lot of heart and reflected the younger Bollywood audience with ease.

Hum Tum۪ (2004)

Hum Tum - Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji

Hum Tum۪ is still one of Khan۪s biggest hits to date as a solo lead and he achieved National Film Award as Best Actor. This film was a romantic comedy that followed the encounters of Karan (Khan) and Rhea (Rani Mukerji) through the years and how they were changing. Karan is a playboy cartoonist who sees the opportunity to flirt with Rhea on a stopover in Amsterdam and goes for it. However Rhea refuses to fall for it and ends up slapping him as a result. The film then skips forward to the next time, the two characters meet and so it continues. What was really new about the film was the fact that each of these sequences were broken up with cartoon strips of Hum and Tum which debated the differences between boys and girls. It was a fun film to watch and it did seem to enthrall the audience with its simply told story.

Saif Ali Khan has had a fantastic career in Bollywood and he still continues to be a firm favourite among the audience. BizAsia would like to wish Khan a big Happy Birthday and wish him all the best for the coming year.
