Birthday Love: Rekha & Amitabh Bachchan memorable songs

Over the years Bollywood has seen many successful pairings that have left the audiences wanting more. Sometimes we have seen these actors appear in numerous films together while at other times we were never able to see their magic on screen again, one such pairing being Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. It has been many years since the two have worked together and when asked about this their reply has always been the same, that if they receive a great script then they would be willing to work together. Whatever the reason maybe their fans await the day this wish of theirs comes true.

Funnily enough their birthdays are a day apart with Rekha celebrating her birthday on the 10th of October and Mr Bachchan celebrating his on the 11th of the same month. While we await the day they reunite on the big screen BizAsiaLive.com has selected some ever popular songs which had the two stars shine together.

‘Humka Maafi Dai Do’ from ‘Ram Balram’ (1980)

Bachchan played the role of a police officer named Balram who comes to Shobha’s (Rekha) house to investigate a robbery that has taken place at her home. Upon seeing Rekha for the first time he is smitten by her, paying more attention to her than actually what has taken place at her home.

The song takes place when Shobha realises that Balram has lied to her only to impress her and she warns him to stay away. The song had both romantic and comedic elements with Bachchan’s character trying everything to get his ladylove to forgive him. Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle sang for the actors bringing out the characters feelings into their vocals.

‘Salaam E Ishq’ from ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978)

A mesmerising, poetic piece in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar that leaves the listener in a trance. Visually all one remembers is Rekha dressed in a pink anarkali outfit capturing the audiences attention as soon as they lay eyes on her. The beats of the tabla combined with the harmonium are a wonderful base for the vocals of both Mangeshkar and Kumar.

Rekha played Zohrabai a dancer who performed every night to make a living. Normally it was her magic that left every visitor captivated by her beauty and words but the night Sikandar (Bachchan) attends her performance she is the one lost in his words. When Sikandar joins her performance she is left stunned as it is the first time that someone has done so and from his words she can feel a connection towards him. It was a union of two hearts who understood one another and were like each other in many ways therefore they were able to feel each others pain.

‘Atharaa Baras Ki from ‘Suhaag’ (1979)

A firecracker of a song which was entertaining, fun and filled with many witty moments. Amit (Bachchan) visits Basanti’s (Rekha) workplace often causing disruption to the whole atmosphere. Amit tries his best to persuade Basanti to leave her profession of dancing and to settle down with him but due to her personal issues she feels she can’t and always turns him down although secretly she does love him. The song revolved around this topic with the sounds of Mohammed Rafi and Mangeshkar fitting the actors performances perfectly. With their chemistry and the energy in the way they performed together they lit up the screen.

‘Pardesiya’ from ‘Mr Natwarlal’ (1979)

One of the most popular songs from this film was ‘Pardesiya’ which till date has been remixed over and over again but still the charm of the original overpowers them all even today. Mangeshkar and Kumar’s vocals on the lyrics of Anand Bakshi were terrific making this colourful song ever so lively. Rekha played the role of Shanno who was the innocent village belle who falls for the sly city guy Natwarlal (Bachchan). In this song she reveals her feelings and also states that everybody in the village knows about it.

‘Dekha Ek Khwab’ from ‘Silsila’ (1981)

Regarded as one of the most romantic songs to ever exist created by the late director Yash Chopra who showed love on the big screen like no other could. His vision and the lyrics by Javed Akhtar combined together made something so beautiful that even today it takes the audiences breath away. It was an innocent love that began for Amit (Bachchan) and Chandni (Rekha) but when life gets in the way they have to part ways. However it seems that fate wanted them to meet once again and their love that had been kept safely away was to break free. When Chandni and Amit meet again they are now married but even that isn’t enough to stop them from walking on the path their heart wants them to.

This was the last film that saw both Rekha and Bachchan together leaving many fans pining to see them again. If anything this song is a beautiful reminder of some of the work they have done.

The team at BizAsiaLive.com wishes both Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan a very happy birthday and their fans hope to see them once again on the big screen.
