Sridevi

If there was an actress who could be described as evergreen and everlasting, it would be Sridevi. Her grace and sheer beauty on screen makes her an enchanting watch and her charisma means that Sridevi lights up every single scene she acts in. As she turns a year older today, BizAsia looks at the actress۪s highlights in the Bollywood industry and just what it is that makes her so special.

Sridevi made her debut on screen in Solva Sawan۪ (1979) and immediately caught the audience۪s attention. Her innocent looks and big brown eyes made her an immediate favourite and her film Himmatwala۪ (1989) opposite Jeetendra made the film the biggest blockbuster of the 1980s. Her dance moves enchanted the audience with the number Naino Mein Sapna becoming an instant hit and her jewelled clothes and elaborate head pieces became fashion of the day.

The actress gained critical acclaim with the Tamil film Sadma۪ (1983) in which she played a child woman suffering from amnesia. Her ability to play challenging roles helped her gain equally more outstanding roles with her next big role in the film Nagina۪ (1986) where Sridevi played a snake and shape shifting woman. Her success was followed by Mr India۪ (1987) opposite Anil Kapoor where she played a ditzy crime journalist. What was most remarkable about her role in the film was her imitation of Charlie Chaplin, which is still talked about to this day. Her dance number in the film with the song Hawa Hawai۪ also became one of Sridevi۪s most unforgettable tracks and she truly shone with each move.

Sridevi۪s status as a sex icon is no secret and one of her most erotic dances was Kaante Nahi Kat Te۪ where she wore the infamous blue sari and danced in the rain. Sridevi continued to deliver hit after hit with Chaalbaaz۪ (1989), Chandni۪ (1989), Lamhe۪ (1991), Khuda Gawah۪ (1992), Roop Ki Rani Choron Ki Raja۪ (1993) and many many others. After a 15 year hiatus, Sridevi returned to the big screen with English Vinglish۪ (2012) and proved herself to be a charming actress who can still to this day, put her younger counterparts to shame.

BizAsia wishes Sridevi a very happy birthday and wishes her all the best for her future endeavours.
