Birthday Love: Abhishek Bachchan’s top 5 leading ladies

Today, as Abhishek Bachchan celebrates his birthday, one wonders how to define him as an actor. Although he has been appreciated more in his character roles such as in ‘Yuva’ (2004) or ‘Guru’ (2007), Bachchan has done a variety of genres in cinema from romance to action. He has been particularly appreciated with just a few leading ladies and BizAsia looked back to see which five he has seen success with.

Kareena Kapoor Khan was Bachchan’s very first heroine in 2000’s ‘Refugee’. The two were much awaited debutantes back then and appeared very different to what they have emerged as today. Following their first film together, they starred together in ‘Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon’ (2003). Since then, they were not seen together after Bachchan’s engagement to Karisma Kapoor was called off. Kapoor Khan has since said she would be happy to work with Bachchan again but no doubt the two have not been approached for a project as yet.

Rani Mukerji and Bachchan have done a number of films together since very on his his career. They were rumoured to have been dating each other too but Bachchan went on to marry Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Mukerji and Bachchan’s popularity as a couple could be directly linked to their resemblance to his parents Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan – in appearance, the jodi is similar. Their chemistry on screen is excellent and totally lures you in. They were last seen together in ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ (2006) where they played a couple whose relationship breaks down because of an extra marital affair.

The reel life charm of Bachchan and his wife Aishwarya was perhaps missed in their first film ‘Dhai Akshar Prem Ke’ (2000) but through the years their real life love seeped through to their performances. ‘Guru’ was a special movie for them both as their engagement was announced not long after its release. They were seen together last in ‘Raavan’ (2010). Aishwarya since gave birth to their daughter and is yet to return to the big screen. No doubt audiences are waiting until they come together again.

Priyanka Chopra and Bachchan have shared films which have seen success and one which has seen real failure. Having said that, this jodi looks great on screen together and their obvious fondness of each other is easy to pick up on. They were last seen together in 2008’s ‘Dostana’ which was, of course, a huge hit. One wonders when they will be brought together again.

The latest in the line of heroines to have looked good with Bachchan is fashionista Sonam Kapoor. Although the duo have only done two films together, there is an inkling that they will not be their last as they seem to compliment each other on screen and share a similar height which makes them look well-suited.
