The BBC has been given the green-light by the British government to launch a rival to Netflix and Amazon Prime.

According to MediaGuardian, the service will be based on subscription revenue, similar to its commercial rivals. It is said that the corporation has already held talks with potentional partners including ITV and NBC Universal for homegrown content.

The publication adds that the BBC will charge viewers to watch BBC programmes post the current 30-day free window. The content will also include original programming, with premiere of shows prior to broadcast.

Last week, the BBC said it welcomes the BBC۪s commitment to develop and test some form of additional subscription services۝, following the publication of the White Paper.
