BBC licence fee set to be scrapped after 2027?

Culture secretary Nadine Dorries has given the strongest hint yet that could change the BBC’s forever.

In what looks like the biggest shakeup for the BBC in its 100-year history, Dorries has said that the current licence fee funding model will be scrapped when the BBC charter come up for renewal in 2027.

She said on Twitter, “This licence fee announcement will be the last. The days of the elderly being threatened with prison sentences and bailiffs knocking on doors, are over.

“Time now to discuss and debate new ways of funding, supporting and selling great British content.”

Dorries has also frozen the current level of funding for the next two years.

The current licence fee is charged annually at £159.
