BBC B’ham celebrates 40 years of Asian shows

BBC Birmingham is celebrating 40 years of BBC Asian Programmes with a special Mini Mela event in the Public Space at The Mailbox, featuring live performances and entertainment, on Sunday 23rd October – between 11am and 5pm.

Working in partnership with City College, dress-making students will stage a fashion show while their colleagues from the Health and Beauty department offer a range of treatments to pamper the public.

Visitors to the Mini Mela event can try their hands at presenting by reading a Desi DNA script to camera, visit a henna tattoo artist for free hand-painting or record 40th Birthday greetings in the video-box.

Behind the scenes visits to BBC Birmingham?s Radio Drama studio are also planned, giving lucky individuals the chance to watch and take part in a specially written scene for Silver Street (BBC Asian Network?s daily radio drama). *Places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Other attractions include live performances from acoustic guitarist and singer – Ajay, the Bollywood Dreams Dancers and a didgeridoo and tabla musical set. DJ?s will be playing music throughout the day and there will be guest appearances from some BBC Asian Network presenters and Silver Street cast.

Pam Renoata, BBC Birmingham?s Public Space Co-ordinator, says: “We are thrilled to be staging the Mini Mela. Visitors to the Public Space are in for a real treat and can expect a range of free activities and entertainment throughout the day – some of which is unique to the BBC. We welcome people to join us as we celebrate the 40th Anniversary with all things Asian”.

BBC Recruitment will also be on hand to offer advice and answer questions on how to gain a career with the BBC.
