Asian Star & Spice FM among community radio stations awarded funds by Ofcom

Ofcom has awarded 14 community radio stations including Asian brands Asian Star and Spice FM money from the Community Radio Fund.

Asian Star in Slough was awarded £13,064 for a Sales Support Officer, while Spice FM in Newcastle Upon Tyne was handed £22,750 for a Fundraising Manager.

The media regulator rejected 58 other applications from community stations. It reminded the stations that the fund is not to cover things such as rent, utility bills or capital expenditure, but to help provide long-term financial security.

Ofcom said, “Some unsuccessful applications suggested roles where the post-holder had a huge range of responsibilities including volunteer management, programming and even presenting daily programmes, alongside revenue development.

“These were often applications for Station Manager posts. The Panel was unlikely to favour such applications because the post-holder was unlikely to devote sufficient time to income generation, therefore making the investment unsustainable.”
