Ashvir Singh Johal makes history by becoming first Sikh manager of British football club

Ashvir Singh Johal has made history by becoming the first Sikh manager of a professional British football club, following his appointment as manager of Morecambe FC.

The 30-year-old was named to the role on Tuesday, succeeding Derek Adams, who was dismissed just a day after the club was rescued from the brink of extinction by new owners, Punjab Warriors.

Singh Johal brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a first-team coach under Kolo Touré at Wigan Athletic and worked alongside Cesc Fàbregas at Italian side Como. He now faces a considerable challenge, with only five players currently under contract and the urgent task of rebuilding the squad.

Morecambe, who were relegated from Sky Bet League Two last season, have seen their opening two National League fixtures postponed due to non-compliance with league regulations.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Singh Johal outlined his immediate priorities: “The first task is to identify the players we need in the building to ensure Morecambe Football Club can compete effectively in the National League.”

He continued: “The short-term goal is to retain our place in the National League by playing exciting, energetic football and working hard. That’s the immediate focus.”

Looking ahead, he emphasised the importance of long-term development: “The long-term aim is to build the right processes and infrastructure. The owners have made their vision for the club very clear. Now it’s about building, growing, and ensuring that in three, four, five years’ time, Morecambe is a fully energised and galvanised football club thriving in the EFL.”
