Anurag Basu says Bollywood not comfortable with women-centric films

Bollywood is seeing a growing trend of women being the ‘heroes’ of their films. With actresses like Kangna Ranaut delivering hits like ‘Queen’ (2014) and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Return’ (2015), it seems that Bollywood is headed in a��new direction. However, director Anurag Basu feels that it is too early to judge this current trend.

Speaking at the ‘Female Protagonists in Bollywood Today-How Real is the Discourse’ at the NFDC Film Bazaar,��Basu said, as according to TOI, “You should not judge the current scenario by just two or three films. You have to see in the coming years where we are headed and how people are taking it in and how many films are being made.”

He also added that the personalities of actors and directors are reflected in the kind of work they do, and that we should have more women directors and writers. He said, “Personalities of actors and directors reflect the kind of work they do. Anand (L Rai) can make Tanu Weds Manu, Vikas (Bahl) can do Queen. But someone like Rohit Shetty cannot do Queen. It depends on the kind of person you are and the way you see women. For example, Salman says some dialogues which Shah Rukh will never say. Women directors and writers should come up and portray them more in films.”

Meanwhile, Basu’s next, ‘Jagga Jasoos’ starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif is still facing much delay and should release next year.
