The BBC Asian Network has confirmed to BizAsia that it has axed its popular ‘Bhangra Breakdown’ show on Sunday afternoons.
The show, which has been presented by Dipps Bhamrah for the past two years will be ending later this month. This will also result in Bhamrah exiting the station after seven years presenting various shows.
On his Facebook, Bhamrah said, “With a heavy heart i have to let you know that in 3 weeks time i will be presenting the final Bhangra Breakdown and my final show on BBC Asian Network.
As we all know, BBC Asian Network is launching a new schedule which is to be an ambitious but tighter schedule. Unfortunately this means the loss of some shows and strands, including Bhangra Breakdown.
Asian Network still has a real commitment to UK and Bhangra music. Bhangra will continue to have a home on Sunday۪s in the new Punjabi show which will launch later in the year. It is not the end for Bhangra music.
For me personally, Sunday 21st October 2012 will be my final broadcast on BBC Asian Network. Its something that i have known about for a while but have not been able to share until now. From presenting shows like The Mix, Weekend Punjabi & Bhangra Breakdown i have been able to do something that i wanted to do as a child….Entertain!
Finally, a genuine and from the heart thank you to all of you…the audience. Thank you for listening to me over the years. I hope that i have entertained you in my own unique way and that i have made some sort of impression on your world. It has been a joy, a pleasure and I trust me when i say that i promise to make my last 3 weeks on air something to remember!”
The BBC Asian Network is undergoing a huge programming revamp this month with most of the specialist output being axed. Recently, ‘Bhangra Mixtape’ with Sonny Ji and the late night show with DJ Kayper were also removed from the schedule.
‘Bhangra Breakdown’ will end on Sunday 21st October. The subsequent Sunday will see ‘Love Bollywood’ starting at 10:00, followed with the ‘Asian Network Presents’ strand for 60 minutes and the current schedule following thereafter. A full Sunday reshuffle of programming will be announced later in the year.
