Poorvi Jain, a Jaipur based theatre and and actress who will be seen debuting with Irrfan Khan in the upcoming ‘Angrezi Medium’. She is playing the role of Khan’s wife in the movie.

BizAsiaLive.com caught up with Jain ahead of the film.

What led to you becoming an actor?
Since childhood, I wanted to become an actor but I never had the courage to confess this to my parents because I was scared whether my family will allow me to go for it or not. During my school time I had never done acting or theatre but I used to watch a lot of TV serials and movies. I observed the way the actors used to perform and always imagined myself to be a part of that set up. In fact, I used to get a lot of scolding from my parents for watching TV the entire day and not doing much physical work, also I used to be quite fat those days so that added on to my problems even more. So after entering into the first year of my college, the first thing I decided to do was to reduce weight. I did not join any gym or yoga classes for that, I did it all by myself and keep working hard for it. Now, in second year I somehow gathered courage to convince my dad for allowing me to do theatres in Jaipur to which he agreed. After watching my first performance he was quite impressed and motivated me to join another theatre play. After that I started going for auditions in Jaipur and my dad always accompanied me there. He was like a support system and kept me pushing forward.

How did ‘Angrezi Medium’ happen?
One morning I got to know that auditions for a Bollywood movie are happening in Jaipur, so I went there. I was given a script to perform and the results were out in about three weeks. I got selected for the role. However, at that point of time, I had no idea that I was going to be cast opposite Irrfan Khan. The shoot took place in Udaipur during the month of April. It was at the shooting set that I got to know that I will be sharing the screen with him.

What was it like working with Irrfan Khan?
When I first met Irrfan Khan, I found him to be very down to earth and humble person. When we met his first words were “Kaisi ho aap?” . He made me feel quite comfortable on the set as if I was an experienced actor and not a newcomer. When it comes to his efficiency at set, he did not take much time to shoot a particular scene. However, he used to improvise a lot which made his acting look quite natural and real. After seeing him working, I felt quite confident on my own and my performance level increased.

Have you watched ‘Hindi Medium’?
Yes, I have watched the movie. The storyline of the movie was amazing. The blend of humour and the dark reality of the education system today, was quite impressive. I felt that Irrfan was perfect for it. I don’t think anyone else could have done more justice to the script than him. Also Saba Qamar’s acting was quite commendable, especially her monologue about “agar usne drugs lena shuru krdia toh?”. All in all it was quite an entertaining film and I am very happy to be a part of the sequel.

In which genre you would like to do your next film?
I want to be a part of the film that focuses on social issues like the film ‘Padman’ (2018). Also I would like to work in suspense and thriller movies which have some unique storyline like the film ‘Andhadhun’ (2018). However, I wish to do more of women-centric films like ‘Queen’, ‘Manikarnika’ too.

What do you seek in a project? Directors or top actors?
To me, content or the script matters more than the directors or the actors with whom I will be sharing screen. The first thing I look forward in a project is the story and my character in it. If I like the story or my character in it then for me who is going to act and direct the film does not matter, I simply decide to go for it.

Who would you most like to work with in terms of actors?
I would like to work with Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Rajkummar Rao, Vicky Kaushal and Ayushmann Khurrana. I admire these actors quite a lot and I think working with them will be fun.

Any more projects up your way now?
I have been approached for some films and I am the process of finalising them. But I can’t disclose any of those details right now.
