Amazon Studios to bankroll more films in India?

Amazon Studios is expected to invest further in direct-to-web films in India after an overwhelming response since its innings in 2019 with Ritesh Batra’s ‘Photograph’.

Amazon Prime Video has also witnessed success with recent Bollywood acquisitions including ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ and ‘Shakuntala Devi’ – both, which were released directly on the platform.

A source told Mid-Day, “The long-term plan was to build a wide slate of films. Since the lockdown has led to increased takers for direct-to-web films, the streaming giant’s studio wing is now geared up to greenlight movie scripts that will be developed solely for the platform.”

The streaming giant is also exploring a distribution model, where it could release its originals for a limited theatrical release simultenously – a strategy that has proven popular in the US.
