Amazon set to shut down streaming service in UK

Amazon has announced plans to close its ad-supported streaming service, Freevee, after five years. Content from Freevee will transition to the main Prime Video platform, with the phase-out expected to be complete in the coming weeks.

Freevee originally hosted shows previously launched on the then ad-free Amazon Prime Video and developed popular originals like Bosch: Legacy and the reboot of the Australian soap Neighbours.

An Amazon spokesperson explained, “To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. Prime members will see no change in available content, while non-Prime viewers will still access a wide range of free streaming options, including select Amazon MGM Studio originals, licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST channels.”

Though Amazon dismissed rumours earlier this year that Freevee would be discontinued, the shift to integrate ads within Amazon’s main streaming service made this decision likely.
