Amazon in talks to buy $2 billion stake in Bharti Airtel

Amazon is reportedly in talks to acquire a $2 billion stake in No.2 Indian carrier, Bharti Airtel.

Bloomberg reports that the US company is in early discussions to buy a 5% stake in the Indian operator, which will give Amazon access to Bharti’s 300 million subscribers.

It is said that Amazon’s foray into the India market, follows rival US technology giant Facebook, who acquired stake in Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd. Microsoft Corp is already considering a similar deal in the same company.

Amazon India declined to comment on the news. However, a Bharti’s spokesperson was cited in the publication saying, “We routinely work with all digital and OTT players and have deep engagement with them to bring their products, content and services for our wide customer base. Beyond that there is no other activity to report.”
