Alka Yagnik opens up about today’s music: “I think soul has gone”
Alka Yagnik is a household name in India. The Bollywood singer has not just hits under her belt, but her latest accomplishment in the digital space clearly tells us why she will remain a timeless musician in the hearts of millions of her fans. Yagnik beat BTS, Taylor Swift and other international music artists to be declared as the most streamed singer for the third consecutive year. She also has a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records because of this feat. The singer in a recent interview was vocal about her criticism of today’s music.
In an interview with Film Companion the Agar Tum Saath Ho singer said, “I think soul has gone. Aisa nahi hai ki achche gaane nahi bante hai, abhi bhi hai. Far and few. There are good songs. But by and large, lip sync karo, ya background ya phir, kuch yaad nahi rehta baad mein. Gaana aap sunn ke theatre se nikalte ho, you cannot hum anything. Kuch yaad nahi rehta. Gaane ki jo roop rekha hai woh kuch samajh nahi aata.” She went on to add, “I am happy if a nice melodious song comes. Let’s do the experimentation, let’s add the gimmicks, let’s do all these rhythm patterns, crazy sounds, but let’s not leave the soul behind.”

Unlike some of the former complaints by many senior musicians and artists, Yagnik seems to understand the nuances of change very well, but one must note that her criticism is pretty valid.
