Pakistani singer Ali Zafar is to sing a qawwali for a Punjabi film in tribute to Amjad Sabri, the Pakistani singer, who was shot dead in Karachi in June.

After singing a qawwali recently at a Pakistani award show, a filmmaker has now approached Zafar to sing Sufi for their movie.

Zafar will also have a speaking role in the scene which contains his song so he has been working on his pronunciation of the Punjabi dialect. In a public statement Zafar said, I am proactive towards my passion for music. I want to explore all the verticals of music from romantic songs to qawwalis to rock scores and anthems. There is a request for a qawwali in a Punjabi film.۝

Zafar is no stranger to providing his voice to various songs in Bollywood. He۪s lent his voice in the past to hits including Mere Brother Ki Dulhan۪ (2011), which starred Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif. He initially began his career as a music composer and became well known after releasing his single Channo۪ from his debut album, Huqa Pani.۪ The album sold over five million copies worldwide, topped various charts and earned Zafar the Lux Style Award for Best Music Album. He۪s no stranger to performing at live shows and concerts as well as making his debut on the acting scene with a leading role in Tere Bin Laden۪ (2010). Signing qawwali adds another string to his already impressive bow.
