Ajay Devgn to turn Ramsay family story into web series instead of movie

Before the pandemic, Ajay Devgn announced that he would be working on a biopic titled ‘The Ramsay Brothers.’ The seven Ramsay brothers are known for making horror films in India. Devgn and producer Priti Sinha acquired the rights to share the story of the brothers. The original plan was to make a film. However, according to recent reports, the plan has now changed to produce a web series to focus on how the seven Ramsay brothers built their horror empire.

The Ramsay Brothers garnered popularity for making cult horror films in the 70s and 80s. The brothers – Kumar Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay, Tulsi Ramsay, Arjun Ramsay, Shyam Ramsay, Keshu Ramsay and Kiran Ramsay, worked together and split various departments of filmmaking among them.

The decision to change this into a series was taken because the makers felt a two-hour-plus movie wouldn’t be able to do justice to the story of the family, reports India Today.

A source said, “The project required extensive research as the Ramsays’ journey begins with patriarch Fatehchand U Ramsay in the pre-independence era, and culminates with their last movie, Talaashi in 1996. Having seen the volume of research, the makers felt that a two-hour-plus movie wouldn’t be able to do justice to the story. Plus, Ajay and Priti were bolstered by the success of their last web production, The Great Indian Murder. So, the team has decided to develop it as a web series.”

The source added, “The series will reveal how the Ramsinghanis used the pseudonym Ramsay after they shifted to Mumbai. Fatehchand (the Ramsay brothers’ father) got into showbiz with Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh (1954) and Ek Nanhi Munni Ladki Thi (1970), before he chanced upon the idea of making a horror film with Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche. Soon, his seven sons joined him in the business. The brothers worked in a coordinated manner, dividing the various responsibilities of filmmaking among themselves, thus ensuring that the movies were made on a shoe-string budget.”

The Ramsay Brothers are known for films like ‘Veerana’ (1988) and ‘Purani Haveli’ (1989). They also created the popular television show, ‘Zee Horror Show’ (1993).
