Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to star in ‘Raat Aur Din’ remake?

The cult classic Nargis Dutt starrer, ‘Raat Aur Din’ (1967) is set for a modern retelling and reports say Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been chosen over Madhuri Dixit in the lead role.

It was a film which was considered way ahead of its time and won Dutt the National Film Award. The movie told the story of Varuna, a married woman who suffers from multiple personality disorder. By day, she is a typical Indian homemaker but at night she calls herself Peggy and walks the streets of Calcutta. The film won critical acclaim for its bold story and Dutt’s performance as Varuna. Over the years the film has developed a cult following and it seems the time is ripe for a modern remake, reports Spotboye.

The production house which is making the new film initially had a favourite to star as the lead role in none other than Madhuri Dixit. But a problem arose when duo Abbas-Mustan were brought in to direct the remake. They had a different name in mind for the role in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. They seemed convinced that only the Cannes Festival favourite could recreate the magic of Dutt.

Interestingly, the pair had starred together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s superhit film ‘Devdas’ (2002), where they had played love rivals vying for the attention of Shah Rukh Khan.

Sources say that Abbas-Mustan’s choice finally won the round and, if things go as per plan, Bachchan will play the role made famous by Dutt all those years ago.
