Abhay Deol calls Anurag Kashyap “a liar” & “toxic”

Abhay Deol came all guns blazing at Anurag Kashyap during a recent interview. The actor was promoting his Netflix web series ‘Trial By Fire’ (2023) that has garnered him a lot of praise. But looks like the ‘Dev D’ (2009) actor was in a mood to lash out at Kashyap.

Deol minced no words as he branded Kashyap “a liar” and “toxic person”. The reason? Kashyap in a 2020 interview described his experience working with yesteryear star Dharmendra’s nephew on ‘Dev D’ as “a painfully difficult experience”. In fact, Kashyap’s film catapulted Deol to the limelight as the latter had not tasted huge success with his debut ‘Socha Na Tha’ (2005) or then the subsequent releases. It was Deol – Kalki Koechlin’s ‘Dev D’, a modern interpretation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s ‘Devdas’ that put Kashyap and the actors of the film in the big league for the first time.

Kashyap had suggested that while the ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ (2011) was willing to break away from Bollywood masala movies, he didn’t want to let go off the “mainstream benefits” or the “luxuries of being a Deol”.  The filmmaker went on to share that Deol stayed at a five star hotel, while the rest of the cast and crew stayed at a hotel in Delhi’s Paharganj area owing to a tight film budget. Kashyap even added that it was Deol’s this behaviour that resulted in a lot of directors steering clear of the actor.

Clearly, the ‘Aisha’ (2010) actor was not amused by Kashyap’s comments. In an interview to Bollywood Hungama Abhay said, “He (Anurag Kashyap) was a good lesson for me. Then I just avoided him, because I don’t need toxic people in my life. Life is too short, and there is so much more to explore. But he (Anurag) is definitely a liar and a toxic person. And I would warn people about him.”

When Kashyap was quizzed about Deol’s remarks, he took a U-turn and instead said, “It is okay if that is how he feels. Everyone has his own version of the truth. Maybe he felt attacked about what I had spoken about him earlier. I have personally apologised to him for hurting his feelings”. He even went on to add, “What I said was what he was in the past. We all evolve with time. He has done a great job in ‘Trial by Fire’. I think it is time to celebrate his strong performance rather than playing the ping-pong of who said what.”

Looks like this war of words has opened a fresh can of worms from the ‘Dev D’ closet. Watch this space for more.
