‘Aashiqui 2’ not a sequel or remake

You would be mistaken if you thought that the forthcoming ‘Aashiqui 2’ was to be related in story or music to 1990’s ‘Aashiqui’ which starred Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal in lead roles. In fact, co-producer Bhushan Kumar has spoken out and said that ‘Aashiqui 2’ is neither a sequel nor a remake.

It is being said that Kumar’s father Gulshan Kumar and Mahesh Bhatt, both co-producers of the musical hit of 1990, made a pact a year after the film’s release that there would be a follow-up a few years later. The forthcoming offering will be directed by Mohit Suri and Kumar has confirmed that it is a film which will build the franchise, according to Hindustan Times.

“The time is right for Aashiqui 2, but don۪t expect to see Rahul Roy, Anu Agarwal and Deepak Tijori, even in cameos. They are too old now and this is an entirely different take on young love”, said Kumar, very candidly. He also went on to say that one may just hear the chartbusting music of ‘Aashiqui’ in the background but that none of the old soundtrack will form a part of the music for ‘Aashiqui 2’.

Kumar has said that Bhatt and himself have “an ear for melody” and therefore don’t need big names to make music for them. This would explain their decision to rope in a not very well-known Jeet Ganguly to compose the music for ‘Aashiqui 2’.

‘Aashiqui 2’ should be releasing in December if everything goes to plan. Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapoor have been signed for the lead roles in the film.
