Abhijeet Bhattacharya in legal trouble for allegations of abusing woman

Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya has landed in legal trouble after allegedly abusing and harassing a woman during a telephonic interview.

The woman in question has accused Bhattacharya of using derogatory remarks while speaking to her on the phone, reports DNA India. A First Information Report  (FIR) has been filed against Bhattacharya and a case has been registered in Amoli police station, Mumbai.

Following a complaint by the woman, the police have registered an FIR under section 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 506 (Criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“The woman had an argument with the singer over some drilling work being done in the society. She claims that she was abused by him. We have registered a case and will be investigating the case further,” the police told the Hindustan Times.

Bhattacharya has however denied the allegations and has commented on the issue. He in fact told the media that the woman had been threatening him in order to extort money from him. “She has been threatening me and others to extort money. I have given a commercial place on rent. My tenants were getting some work done, and she objected to it. Being the owner of the place, I intervened in it,” the singer said. He also went on to say that the woman herself has made an illegal extension on the second floor, and that the police has yet not contacted him.

This is not the first time Bhattacharya has been caught in a controversy. He was previously under the scanner for allegedly abusing a female journalist and voicing his support for Salman Khan in the hit-and-run case. Also, in October 2015, Bhattacharya had been booked by the Oshiwara police for allegedly molesting and abusing a 34-year-old woman at a Durga Puja pandal in Lokhandwala in Mumbai. While in 2016, he was named in an FIR following a police complaint by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Preeti Kumar Menon for allegedly abusing a woman journalist on Twitter.
