UK Ratings: How locally produced Asian TV shows are faring

With UK Asian TV broadcasters in a conundrum to win over audiences, attempts to localise programming with UK productions have either proved ratings gold or disastrous. BizAsiaLive.com looks at the locally produced shows and how they fare in the numbers game.

Surprisingly, Star Plus, the biggest Asian TV broadcaster in the UK, has been wholly dependent on imported shows from India. Its been a while since Star Plus aired UK specific shows. Similarly, Sony Entertainment Television successfully aired a couple of cookery shows, which were recorded in London but has since been reliant on programmes from India.

Going by data for week commencing Monday 30th July, see how each local Asian TV show has performed:
Original telecast ratings only

Title of show: ZEE Companion
Channel: ZEE TV
Ratings:
Monday – 4,300 viewers
Tuesday – 2,900 viewers
Wednesday – 1,900 viewers
Thursday – 1,400 viewers
Friday – Below 1,000 viewers

Title of show: Zing Jukebox
Channel: Zing
Ratings:
Monday – 1,000 viewers
Tuesday – Zero
Wednesday – Zero
Thursday – Below 1,000 viewers
Friday – Below 1,000 viewers

Title of show: Desi Beat
Channel: Colors
Ratings:
Saturday – 17,000 viewers

Title of show: The Place To Eat
Channel: &TV
Ratings:
Saturday – Zero

As the above data suggests, ‘Desi Beat’ on Colors has proved the most consistent with higher than average ratings boosting the channel’s output at weekends. ‘The Place To Eat’, which has successfully ran several seasons, has seen viewership wane over the last few weeks. ZEE TV, which is the only Indian TV broadcaster out of the Big 4, to air live shows, has had little success with ‘Jukebox’ being pitted in the competitive 18:30 slot. It seems competition from fictions on other channels is taking its toll on ratings for the music request show.

Please note: Above data is overnight figures, which may change slightly after seven days when consolidated data has been accounted for. BizAsiaLive.com publishes consolidated figures every Monday.
