Discovery mulls over European TV business post Brexit

Discovery is said to be mulling over its European television plans, in response to the market changes after Brexit.

Reports say that the broadcaster, which operates over 100 TV channels across Europe from West London, is planning to shutdown its European playout hub, impacting 100 jobs. Its transmission will then be moved to the US. However, it will continue to employ 1,300 people in the UK for its 16 channels.

MediaGuardian reports that Discovery will be moving the playout of non-live channels, while the playout centre for sport and live broadcast is expected to remain in Europe.

The channels licences will remain in the UK, to comply with Ofcom regulations. However, it is understood that if the government fails to stroke a deal to keep EU-wide broadcast rights post Brexit, then companies will look at relocating parts of their businesses and TV licences to the continent so it continues to broadcast across Europe seamlessly.
